Why does the Cottage Classic collection use an acrylic color stain instead of paint?
Plain and simple…because an acrylic color stain lasts longer. Paint does effectively seal the wood – temporarily. It's the unpainted areas you can't see that create the problems. Screw holes on the underside of every board, for instance, invite moisture to work its way under the painted surface. With no place for the water to go, the result is rotting wood under the surface. Painted Cypress products will begin to deteriorate within two years if left outside in the weather. A water-based or oil-based stain, on the other hand, allows the wood to breathe. Any moisture that gets in can still get out. After the color stain is applied to each Cottage Classic piece, it is lightly sanded to create a slightly weathered look.

As others have said, the directions are not complete. They seem to take shortcuts with how to put it together as if the directions are for those who have already built one of these. However, the holes fit fine, they have to be "tight" in order for the swing support not to be sloppy. Two people put it together (one knew what he was doing, the other just followed orders) and it was a short afternoon project but, needed pre-work to study the diagrams on the incomplete directions. We also had to buy two bolts to fasten the swing to the arbor and we did buy the sturdy swing springs offered on Hayneedle. They are great and add to the comfort of the swing. The base does not seem sturdy enough for more than a mild swing, thus the calming identitifer. It's very relaxining overall, it looks great in our yard. One other con - there were two spots where the stain was not applied so we contacted the company and they immediately sent us a small can of matching stain so we could "touch it up." The surface was not sanded or finished as described, so it does not really have antique look to it.

I purchased this garden swing as a gift for my wife. Although it is beautiful, it should have been constructed more soundly. Staples rather than screws are used in the side pieces of the arbor. As others have written, malalignment of some screws with holes makes assembly of the swing difficult. Perhaps not due to the fault of the manufacturer, the top of the arbor was cracked upon arrival. Additionally the arbor does not come with any device to anchor it to the ground raising potential safety issues. If you are not "handy", you will need help assembling, and perhaps reinforcing this product.

I instantly fell in love with this when I saw the picture. I hestitated due to the comments about how hard it was to put together. I'm so glad I went ahead and ordered it anyway. It took about 5 hours with the two of us, me and my friend who does this sort of thing for a living. It's a shame that such a high-priced item would show up with such poor directions and holes that don't match, etc.
In the end, it's sturdy and just perfect in my front yard. I can't tell you how many compliments I get from people I don't even know. It is really the talk of the neighborhood. I love it!!! and comfortable too.

It took my carpenter and me about 3 hours to put it together. Then another 2 hours to putty the staple holes and paint it. It should say that it only comes primed/ready to paint (definitely not weather proof the way it comes). It is great to sit in and very cute in my garden. I love it but I think it was a little overpriced for the quality.
My carpenter suggested that I stabilize it on the bottom with a 2x4 or two to keep it square. I am going to do that.

Love The Way The Swing & Arbor Look - It Is The Cherry On Top Of Our Patio/Garden Project - Did Well In a Big Windy Rainstorm Tonight So Seems Sturdy - However, Hubby Got Frustrated Assembling It, Not All Holes Were Lined Up Correctly And Required Some Additional Drilling - Poor Instructions On The Arbor - Much Better Instructions For The Swing Seat......
