Standard springs remain fully compressed until the weight on them crosses a threshold, then they expand. If you bounce, the spring hits a hard stop on the way up. These are always in some tension and allow for a smooth ride no matter how much, or how little weight is on them. I'm glad I read the review here, or I would have cut some garage door springs and had inferior performance.

The springs do add comfort to the swing. However the chrome finish leaves you with the feeling you picked them up at [...]. Dubious that this finish would survive when exposed to the elements, I mounted the swing under the porch. The hooks on the ends of the springs are rather small and probably work just fine with a chain and eye bolt. Anything larger such ropes and swivels then you need to get creative.
