About Shorea Wood and Linseed Oil
Shorea is possibly the best wood choice for outdoor furniture. Related to Burma teak, this hardwood grows naturally and plentifully in the Pacific Rim countries. Because shorea is dense, heavy, and hard, and contains an abundance of natural oils, it is highly resistant to rot, bug infestation, weather, and marring. Shorea (red lauan) wood will have variations is color - from a red to a yellow cast.
The Shorea wood for this item is treated with linseed oil. Linseed oil is not a varnish. The oil soaks into the pores of the wood leaving a shiny (not glossy) surface that shows off the grain of the wood. Linseed oil helps protects the wood from denting by compression and from accelerated deterioration.
After assembly simply wipe the bench with a damp cloth to remove any excess oil that may be remaining. Please note that it is recommended to let your bench sit outside for 2-3 days before sitting on it to let the stain air out and completely dry.
Shorea is strong and weather-resistant enough to be left untreated. If left untreated, each piece will weather to a nice shade of gray. The weathering process will change the color, but the grain will still be smooth. You may treat each piece with linseed oil to prolong weathering. Each piece is durable, classic, and elegant.

I looked a long time to find just the right porch swing. I liked the looks and the curved seat on this one, so I then read the reviews and they were all very positive. I would not hesitate to purchase this item again! I also reasearched the wood to be sure it wasn't some bogus name for Fir or something. This wood is comparable(or better according to some people) than TEAK! It takes the same easy maintenance as teak too. Just rub it with linseed oil if it starts to dry out, OR leave this heavy tight-grained wood to turn a nice weathered gray WITHOUT splintering.

This swing reminds me of when we were little. Mom put my sister and me in the swing while she washed our clothes to be hung on the clothes line. she tied us in with diapers so we were secure and she was right there and we were swinging. Love those memories. Mine will be in my back yard, so I can sit and day dream, any time I want to.
